Glagah

Glagah is a village located in Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta Province. It boasts its natural beauty of a tropical beach and hence is a popular destination for many domestic tourists. The Glagahnese are steep in their culture, traditional rituals, and ceremonies. Apart from those, its unique fishing culture is very much embraced and celebrated by the local community. Glagah is very much prone to an Indian Ocean tsunami due to a South Java megathrust earthquake with an estimated maximum scale of M8,8. Located in less than a perfect geographical location, the community has kicked start to brace themselves for tsunami in the past two years. Glagah residents have made tremendous effort to reduce the risk of the catastrophe in various activities such as mitigation, preparedness and emergency response. These activities duly conform to the twelve indicators that have been set by UNESCO / IOC Tsunami Ready Community.

Situated next to the village is an enormous structure of an airport which is Yogyakarta International airport (YIA). The existence of YIA is an attractive potential resource for Glagah community. YIA has committed to serve Glagah community by providing an evacuation spot within the airport itself. With its elevation at 23 meters and its maximum capacity to contain 4.000 people. This commitment is documented in the Earthquake and Tsunami Evacuation Procedure in the YIA Earthquake and Tsunami Response SOP Compilation Document.

A prevailing task force called The Forum Pengurangan Risiko Bencana – FPRB (Village Disaster Risk Reduction Forum), guided intensively by Local Disaster Management Office of Kulon Progo (BPBD Kulon Progo) and The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics of Indonesia (BMKG), has actively performing its main duty in preparing its community to fulfil those twelve indicators. Glagah community has gained an absolute confidence in proposing its village to be a Tsunami Ready Community and got recognition from IOC-UNESCO in 2022.
