Kelurahan Lolong Belanti

Padang is a city that has the potential for earthquakes and tsunamis due to the location of its coast which is in the west, directly opposite the Mentawai-Siberut Megathrust earthquake source zone. Based on research conducted by EOS Nanyang Technological University Singapore and LIPI, it is known that the tsunami was triggered by an earthquake with a magnitude of M 8.9, with a depth of 30 km. The source of the earthquake (epicenter) is estimated to be about 150 km southwest of Padang. The first tsunami wave is expected to reach Padang Beach in about 20 minutes after the earthquake with a height of 5-11 meters above sea level. Based on the records of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) Tsunami Catalog, West Sumatra has experienced tsunamis several times, namely in 1797, 1833, 1904, and 1935.

Lolong Belanti Disaster Preparedness Group (KSB) has actively preparing for different natural hazards including Tsunami. Under the supervision of the Local Disaster Management Agency of Padang the KSB implemented the awareness and training activities for the community members, village administrators and other elements of the Lolong Belanti Village. With the support of a local NGO, Komunitas Siaga Tsunami (KOGAMI), BMKG, and BPBD the KSB and all village elements managed to get the National Tsunami Ready Recognidion in October 2022. The twelfe IOC UNESCO Tsunami Ready Indicators have been successfully fulfilled and the Lolong Belanti Village got the IOC UNESCO recognition at the end of 2022.
