Nagari Tapakih

Nagari Tapakih in Padang Pariaman is located in the west coast of Sumatra Island, directly opposite the Mentawai-Siberut Megathrust earthquake source zone. Based on research conducted by EOS Nanyang Technological University Singapore and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences at the time (Now it is called BRIN), it has been identified that a tsunami was triggered by an earthquake with a magnitude of M 8.9, with a depth of 30 km. The source of the earthquake (epicenter) is estimated to be about 150 km southwest of Padang Pariaman Coast. Based on tsunami modeling in the Padang Pariaman area from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), that the tsunami will reach the Tiram coast in 40 minutes with a slope of 3-4 km inland. The height of the tsunami reached 10 meters and continued to decrease at high land elevations. Based on the records in the Tsunami Catalog of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), West Sumatra has experienced tsunamis in 1797, 1833, 1904, and 1935.

The Nagari Tapakih Community Disaster Preparedness (KSB) has actively prepared the community of different natural hazards including Tsunami. Under the supervision of the Local Disaster Management Agency of Padang Pariaman (BPBD Padang Pariaman), the KSB implemented the awareness and preparedness programme and activities (Destana) for the community members, village administrators, and other elements of the Village.

With the support of the local BMKG in Padang Panjang, the BPBD Padang Pariaman, the Komunitas Siaga Tsunami - KOGAMI (local NGO), the KSB of Nagari Tapakih worked on their capacity for the 12 indicators of the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready. Upon successfully fulfilled the 12 indicators, the Nagari Tapakih received the National Recognition in March 2023 and the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready recognition in December 2023.
