Kelurahan Purus

Padang city is a city that has the potential for earthquakes and tsunamis due to the location of its coast which is in the west, directly opposite the Mentawai-Siberut Megathrust earthquake source zone. Based on research conducted by EOS Nanyang Technological University Singapore and LIPI, it is known that the tsunami was triggered by an earthquake with a magnitude of M 8.9, with a depth of 30 km. The source of the earthquake (epicenter) is estimated to be about 150 km southwest of Padang City. The first tsunami wave is expected to reach Padang City Beach in about 20 minutes after the earthquake with a height of 5-11 meters above sea level. Based on the records of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Tsunami Catalog, West Sumatra has experienced tsunamis several times, namely in 1797, 1833, 1904, and 1935. After the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh on December 25, 2004, the concern of earthquake and tsunami on the west coast of Padang City are increasing.

Purus Disaster Preparedness Group (KSB) has actively preparing for the threat of natural disasters and extraordinary events (KLB) in Purus Village. With the support of the Padang DIsaster Management Agency, the KSB continously conducted awareness and training activities for the village administrators and all elements of the Purus Village community. With the support of a local NGO, Komunitas Siaga Tsunami (KOGAMI) and BMKG and BPBD the KSB and all village elements have managed to get the National Tsunami Ready Recognidion in October 2022 based on the 12 IOC UNESCO Tsunami Ready Indicators and have been successfully fulfilled all indicators and got the IOC UNESCO recognition at the end of 2022.
