Kuta Mandalika

Kuta in Central Lombok Regency is a coastal village. It is one of Indonesia's Five Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP) developed by the government in 2015. Kuta has significant economic resources from the tourism sector. Kuta has a unique landscape of rolling hills inland. On the coast line, there are many pockets of pristine, quiet, white sand beaches still in their rudimentary state.

The Indo-Australia and Eurasia subduction zones which are located in south Lombok cause a potential tsunami to the southern part of the island. Therefore, Kuta which is located in south Lombok is extremely vulnerable to tsunami. In order to understand the potential tsunami in Kuta, Central Lombok Regency, the community began to empower its capacity to deal with the tsunami threat. Since 2013, the community has actively collaborated with numerous institutions such as the National Disaster Management Office, the Local Disaster Management Office, GIZ Program 2013, UNRAM, JICA and the Australian Government.

The preparation of tsunami hazard maps, evacuation maps, emergency plans and tsunami drills are part of the implementation of 12 tsunami preparedness indicators. The community is involved in the planning, the development of the emergency plan, and the tsunami drill, which is held on a regular basis to practice their response capabilities. In early 2022, after a verification process of the indicators which was conducted by the National Tsunami Ready Board (NTRB), Kuta had successfully had a tsunami ready community recognition certificate for the national level. At the end of 2022 the Kuta village received the IOC-UNESCO Recognition as Tsunami Ready Community.
