Pangandaran

Pangandaran is a top-rated beach holiday destination with miles of the stretch of famous Pangandaran beach. Pangandaran is located in the Megathrust zone where a tectonic earthquake can reach a maximum magnitude of M8.7. According to a tsunami inundation modelling , the height of the tsunami that hits Pangandaran is about 10-14 metre with a horizontal penetration of about 4 metres inland. Historical fact shows that tsunami has attacked Pangandaran on September 11, 1921 (M7.5) and July 17, 2006 (M7.7), so preparedness for tsunami has started since 2006 and continue to be improved.

The Pangandaran Village Community were involved in preparing the hazard maps and evacuation maps, the placement of Tsunami Public Information Boards, Evacuation Route Signs and Assembly Point Signs. The evacuation shelters are also based on the collaboration with some hotels in the Pangandaran Village area. The Pangandaran Village's disaster management is supported by Barakuda SAR, Community Protection Unit (LINMAS), Search and Rescue Council for Tafsir Al-Qur'an (SAR MTA), Balawista, Taruna Siaga Bencana.

The Pangandaran Village Community worked on the twelve UNESCO IOC Tsunami Ready Community indicators to become a Tsunami Ready Community. This achievement was done with the assistance from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in collaboration with the Pangandaran Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). The Pangandaran Village was awarded a national level tsunami-ready community recognition certificate in January 2022. Following this, the Pangandaran Village received UNESCO-IOC for tsunami ready recognition end of January 2022.
