ICG Tsunami National Contact (TNC):

The TNC is the person designated by an ICG Member State government to represent his/her country in the coordination of international tsunami warning and mitigation activities.

The person is part of the main stakeholders of the national tsunami warning and mitigation system programme. The person may be the Tsunami Warning Focal Point, from the national disaster management organization, from a technical or scientific institution, or from another agency with tsunami warning and mitigation responsibilities.

Through IOC Adopted Decision EC-CLVII, Dec 3.2.1, Member States agreed to update two tsunami definitions recommended by the IOC TOWS Working Group (IOC/TOWS-WG-VII/3, 2014).
There continues to be emphasis on the need for harmonization of terminology across the ICGs. Based on the development experience since 2005 of CARIBE-EWS, IOTWS and NEAMTWS and the enhancement of PTWS, that (i) the number of NTWCs has significantly increased, and (ii) it is critically important that tsunami bulletins are sent to the appropriate points of contact, the TOWS-WG recommended that the definitions of National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) and Tsunami Warning Focal Point (TWFP), the TOWS-WG, be update to read as follows”

· National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC): A centre officially designated by the government to monitor and issue tsunami warnings and other related statements within their country according to established National Standard Operation Procedures.
· Tsunami Warning Focal Point (TWFP). A 24 x 7 point of contact (office, operational unit or position, not a person) officially designated by the NTWC or the government to receive and disseminate tsunami information from an ICG Tsunami Service Provider according to established National Standard Operation Procedures. The TWFP may or not be the NTWC.
