Tsunami Impact on Nearby Unpopulated Islands

The largest near-field impacts of the tsunami were fortunately confined to the unpopulated islands around the old caldera, particularly the sides of Rakata and Sertung that directly face the southwest flank of Anak Krakatau 2-4 km away. An international post-tsunami survey team found the tsunami had scoured all vegetation from those shores up to a maximum elevation of 85 m on Rakata and 83 m on Sertung; the average trim line elevation is more in line with the Giachetti model predictions of approximately 30 m (Borrero et al., Paris et al.).
