4 May 2000, Mw 7.6, Minahasa Peninsula,Sulawesi

 

On May 3, 2000 a major earthquake (magnitude of 7.3) struck the eastern part of Sulawesi and the neighbouring off shore smaller islands in Indonesia. This was the largest earthquake to strike Sulawesi island since November 29, 1998 (magnitude 7.8). A devastating tsunami was generated that struck the off shore islands of Peleng and Banggai in neighbouring Central Sulawesi province. Combined, the earthquake and the tsunami waves killed46 people, injured 264, and left 30,000 homeless. There was extensive damage in the Luwuk area, Sulawesi and on nearby islands. Eighty percent of buildings were damaged or destroyed on Banggai. There was extensive damged on Peleng. Most of the damage east of Luwuk and on Pelengwas caused by tsunami waves which reached heights up to to 6 meters.
